    Event Description:

    The goal of the Bridges to the Future: Connecting Early Learning to Kindergarten event is to support early elementary school teachers and staff, and early learning professionals; particularly those with children between the ages of zero to eight, by providing an opportunity to learn and to advance the educational and transition opportunities for the children they teach. For a complete listing of our conference sessions, please click here.

    Event Structure:

    The 7th Annual Bridges to the Future Early Childhood and Early Elementary Educators Conference will be held on Thursday, March 26th & Friday, March 27th from 8am to 5pm each day at Western Oregon University, located in Monmouth, Oregon.

    The goal of this conference each year is to support early elementary school teachers and staff, and early learning professionals; particularly those with children between the ages of zero to eight, by providing an opportunity to learn and to advance the educational and transition opportunities for the children they teach. 

     

    Conference Fees: 

    Fees include full access to all conference events, lunch, materials, and the welcome Reception.

    Single day registration: $65 

    Full conference registration: $100

    Reparenting is a practice that affects all of our interactions with people. This training will address how reparenting ourselves can support educators in interactions with co-workers, children, families and even their relationship with themselves. It will go over how past experiences from childhood can follow educators into the classroom, the impact of that, and how to begin to notice when this is happening. The training will also offer educators tools for self-regulation and assisting children with their own self- awareness and self-regulation. These tools will be particularly helpful regarding the challenge of burnout.

    Everyone’s an Engineer! Elevating children and families’ culture and experience to build a brighter future

    Engineering is everywhere, and it's not just bridges. Children and adults innovate every day and by helping families see their children’s learning, we are building a kinder, more competent future. Learn about how to engage in engineering activities with children (ages 0-5+) and see how it builds stronger social skills and higher academic achievement. Rather than solving problems FOR their children, parents/caregivers can be provided with strategies to see the capabilities of their children, respond with developmentally appropriate support, and grow WITH their children. This workshop will explore the engineering design process and how you can create and co-create engineering opportunities for children and families in the classroom environment and at home.

    Teaching with Purpose: Evidence-Based Supports for Young Children with Autism

These opportunities for learning can be set up indoors or outside, using any nature available in any location.

    The session objectives are:

    5.1.2: Understand how to Integrate learning across subject fields and domains.

    Recognize the research behind nature and play-based learning.

    5.1.6: Identify and design provocations and experiences built to allow Input and play from children.

    Nurturing Early Math Through Play And Children’s Literature: What Are The Big Ideas?

    This workshop will help the participants discover how young children develop deep mathematical thinking through everyday play and exploration. This hands-on workshop introduces the key concepts from Big Ideas of Early Mathematics by Erikson Early Math Collaborative, focusing on number sense, counting, patterns, geometry, and more. Participants will learn practical strategies to support early math learning through engaging activities, meaningful conversations, and intentional teaching. The participants will explore how to use quality children’s books to promote mathematical concepts. This workshop is perfect for early childhood educators looking to boost confidence and creativity in math instruction.


    Safely Navigating Tantrums and Other Intense Escalations

    This session provides participants with an overview of evidence-based practices that are effective at reducing the intensity and duration of potentially dangerous child escalations. How to build a solid foundation to de-escalation strategies through a professional mindset and maintaining a daily proactive plan to promote emotional regulation skills is provided. Specific verbal and non-verbal communication techniques that can diffuse an escalating situation with children are covered. A process professionals can use to document, learn from and then plan for reducing future occurrences of child escalations is outlined and shared.


    Structuring a Classroom

    This workshop is presented in a PowerPoint and video venue with opportunities for discussion and asking questions. The presentation includes four objectives: 

    • Creating a positive classroom environment and structure that is safe and inclusive.  
    • Creating classroom expectations to promote a positive, safe and inclusive learning environment. 
    • Creating a collaborative structure with staff and parents to enhance a student's learning that is consistent and promotes students' wellbeing in all environments. 
    • Handouts will be provided for participants to design their classroom structure and websites that reference structuring a classroom and establishing a positive learning environment.

Participants will learn about the relationship of the Pyramid Model to prevention science, equity, inclusion, trauma-informed care, anti-bias practice and the use of data for decision-making, understanding child behavior, and the research that provides an evidence-base for the use of the Pyramid Model.

    Supporting Self-Regulation in Children 3-5 Years: Session B: Creating an informal plan to improve a child’s specific problematic behavior

    Participants will create an informal plan to support a child who is struggling with self-regulation. Come prepared with a particular student in mind and some problematic behavior that you would like to help them change.

    Participants will critically examine a student’s dysregulated behavior and  determine the specific problem, analyze the problem behavior and set an attainable goal. They will then propose changes that could be made to the environment, the task and interactions with the student. Next participants will assess the student’s preferences and devise motivating strategies and deconstruct the task into the smaller steps required to meet the goal. Finally participants will formulate the progression of adult scaffolded supports needed for the student to meet the goal.

    Participants will examine their current personal self-care practices at work and at home and plan practical, positive changes to improve their resilience in the workplace.

    Next participants will plan ways to collaborate with families to promote respect for each family’s values, culture, and home experience and build positive, reciprocal partnerships, so that families can play a role in communicating their goals, expectations, concerns, wants and dreams for their child. 

    Both these exercises can contribute to each participant's ability to effectively meet the self regulation needs of their children.
